I’ve recently learned about this awesome website, www.carsonified.com, which is based in England. A saying on the front page which describes the purpose of this site is, “We’re hugely passionate about the web. It’s in our blood. We believe it’s our duty to bring the web community together to learn, converse and connect. We produce world class web events to make this happen.”
My college professor, Carol Cox, of my Internet Business Models course at Full Sail University, has turned me on to one of the site’s “Future of Web Apps London 2008” videos to watch for an extra credit assignment. I have found it to be very enlightening and enjoyed watching the presentations.
In this video, web startup companies were given an opportunity to pitch their business in a presentation format, but they only had one minute (60 seconds) to do so.
The following was the lineup in this particular video show.
The first startup presentation was http://phonefromhere.com which is a site that allows you to add voice, speech, and talking to your website. This allows visitors to your site to be able to talk to you or your advertisers without having to acquire and use a handset or to download any software; it is done directly there on the website.
The presentation, according to the judging panel, was not very good and I actually had to watch it a few times to understand it myself. The business model is an 800-number business model.
The second startup presentation in the lineup was http://raffle.it. Raffle.it is a marketplace for raffles that are affordable for everyone. There are a fixed number of tickets in each raffle. Each ticket comes with a reward voucher for a related retailer. The process assures that everyone comes away with something. They also use their platform for working with schools to help the parents of the children win things like libraries and also encourage charity work amongst the raffle community.
The judges were very excited about the presentation and also the business being presented and felt it would be a very successful money maker and also a place for Internet marketers to acquire leads.
The business model is the “lowest unique bid” model.
The third presentation is http://theiplatform.com which allows integration of websites into multiple social networks. The client integrates with the iplatform API and then that site can be accessed with applications on Facebook, Bebo and MySpace and all different networks can interact with each other no matter what network they are on.
The presentation was good, but the business was not rated high and was suggested that the product can be enhanced for more value.
The business model is to charge a setup fee and ongoing license fee and also to take a cut of any money spent on promoting the application.
Next in the lineup is Diary.com who have gotten a prime domain name. Diary.com is a new way to keep a diary and its target audience is 16-24 year old women and on Diary.com they can interact “privately” with their “real” friends while also being able to share files, media and links at the same time.
Judges did not think presentation was good because they chose to tell how other sites were bad and not telling about how great their site was.
The revenue model would be targeted ads, premium users, affiliate marketing, and virtual economy items.
Last in the lineup is http://erepulik.com/en which is a massive multi-player online strategy game which can be played in 15 minutes rather than the boatload of time other strategy games take. It is browser-based and also text-based so can be used on multiple platforms.
The presentation, according to the judges, was very well done and it was agreed that the business idea was a great one.
The revenue is created by selling virtual currency, erepublik gold. It was briefly mentioned, but passed over, that it is sort of a “freemium” business model.
With all presentations given, the top three presentations were announced as; No. 3 – iPlatform.com; No. 2 – Raffle.it; and No. 1 was erepublik.com.
I learned a lot about how to value a good app idea, along with how to present the idea in a presentation in 60 seconds, and will definitely keep up with Carsonified and their app events.
